The audacious new film from writer-director Sean Baker, starring Simon Rex in a magnetic, live-wire performance, Red Rocket is a darkly funny and humane portrait of a uniquely American hustler and a hometown that barely tolerates him.

 A Note from   Sean Baker

Hi everyone —

I wouldn’t consider myself eloquent or an essayist or even good at post-it’s… so it’s difficult to wax poetic about why you should see Red Rocket or what it means to me or anything like that. What I will say is if you’re able to safely see it on the big screen, it would really mean a lot to me.

February 2020 Sean Baker Crew Red Rocket on the set

A little backstory: in February of 2020 we were all coming to the realization that the pandemic was real, life was changing and everything was shutting down. For over two years I worked on a film that was about to go into production in the summer of 2020 but it had to be put on hold. Then, I got the opportunity to shoot something smaller that could be made safely during the pandemic and I took it. We didn’t know if and when cinemas would ever open up again.

Why shoot a film for an exhibition model with an uncertain future? I have only one answer for this question: When I make films, I have the big screen in mind. I make films that are intended to be watched on a larger-than-life screen in a dark movie theater, surrounded by strangers who are communally experiencing the same thing.

My team and I moved forward with the blind faith that things would someday get back to normal and a theatrical presentation would be possible. My scrappy team of ten people and courageous actors did it. We made a picture that was optimized for cinemas — framed, paced, colored and mixed with theatergoers in mind. And A24 has given us a theatrical window that is rare these days and for all the reasons above, I truly appreciate this. For two months, audience members will be able to experience the film as it was intended to be seen and heard.

So here’s my pitch: support your local cinema. Whether it’s seeing Red Rocket or something else that you’ve been looking forward to, it would really mean the world to me. Red Rocket is not going to save cinema, but your patronage will. Peace.
